Seen here in a tonal colourway, the Nike Waffle Racer Shoes feature a dominant nylon upper in team red with suede overlays surrounding the toe-box and eyestays offering another texture in the same shade. Sharp contrasts of white cut through the red on the tongue and wedge midsole, while metallic silver hints run from the leather swooshes on the lateral sides to the heel tab. Further branded details include a printed Nike spellout and a vintage woven label on the exposed foam tongue.
The waffle outsole that gave this shoe its name was designed as an answer to the desire for a sports shoe that could offer traction on any terrain without restricting the runner. This paired with the modern application of a memory-foam sockliner and dual-density EVA midsole allows for responsive cushioning that’s built to last throughout any adventure.
The Waffle Racer is a long forgotten legend of Nike, gaining its first reproduction this year following two heavy hitting collabs with Japanese designer Sacai and Off-White. The shoe was designed over 42 years ago by Bill Bowerman, Nike’s Co-Founder, in his kitchen through the use of his home waffle iron. This developed a pattern for the innovation and experimentation that went on to define Nike.
